As reported  in the coventry Evening Telegraph by the sports reporter who travelled  with Nuneaton  on their scottish pre-season  tour:

"There were no  fanfares  and few things  to come when  Alex Ferguson  made his managerial debut  against Nuneaton Borough. In fact on that day of August 1974, the scot , who went on to be hailed  as a greatest  soccer boss of all time - made a distinctly unmemorable impact . He had just been put in charge of the club , a down beat secodn division club , after finising  his playing days  with Ayr  United. Ferguson took  the 40 pound a week  part-time  job and was forced  to field a  scratch  side for his first game , a preseason  friendly at home  to Nuneaton"
